The rush of everyday life, screen time and excessive visual stimuli can compromise our vision in ways we do not always immediately perceive.
Small signs such as frequent headaches, difficulty focusing or eye strain may indicate that something needs attention.

And the sooner we identify these issues, the easier we can take care of them with care and responsibility.
Why the health of our eyes deserves constant care 👁️#
Our eyes are incredibly complex and sensitive organs. They work incessantly from the moment we wake up until we close our eyelids to sleep. Every blink, every eye movement, every focus adjustment represents a delicate work of our visual system.
With the increased use of electronic devices, it has never been more important to monitor eye health. Studies show that prolonged exposure to screens can cause so-called computer vision syndrome, which affects millions of people worldwide.
In addition, some visual conditions develop silently, without causing noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Glaucoma, for example, is known as “ silent thief of vision” precisely because it progresses without obvious signs until the damage is already advanced.
Signs that you need to evaluate your vision#
Our body always sends us messages when something is not right. With vision is no different. Being attentive to the signals that your eyes give is critical to keep eye health up to date.
- Difficulty seeing distant or near objects clearly
- Need to squint to focus better
- Frequent headaches, especially after reading or using the computer
- Excessive sensitivity to light
- Blurry or haloed vision around lights
- Difficulty seeing at night or in low light environments
- Often tired, red, or irritated eyes
- Perception of spots or floating points in the visual field
How technology can be your ally in prevention#
We live in an era where technology, when well used, can be a great partner of our health. Visual assessment applications emerge as practical tools for a first contact with the health of our eyes, allowing us to identify possible professional care needs.
It is important to understand that these digital features do not replace an eye doctor appointment, but work as an initial thermometer, a friendly alert that invites us to pay more attention to how we are seeing the world.
The Vision Test app is one of those tools that democratizes access to a preliminary eye health assessment. It offers different types of tests that can be performed in the comfort of your home, at your own pace.
What you can evaluate with digital visual tests#
Modern visual testing apps offer a variety of assessments that cover different aspects of our vision. Each test has a specific purpose and can reveal valuable information about how your eyes are working.
The visual acuity test, for example, checks your ability to see details at different distances. The Ishihara test evaluates color perception, identifying possible cases of color blindness. The Amsler test is especially useful for detecting distortions in the visual field that may indicate problems in the macula.
There are also assessments for astigmatism, which check whether you see lines in a distorted way, and contrast sensitivity tests, which are important for assessing how your eyes distinguish objects in different lighting conditions.
The importance of regularity in visual assessments 📅#
Just as we do regular medical check-ups, our vision also needs continuous follow-up. The optimal frequency varies with age, family history, and existing health conditions, but making a habit of monitoring periodically is an essential self-care act.
For young adults with no known visual problems, an evaluation every two years may be sufficient. However, after age 40, when natural changes related to presbyopia (difficulty seeing closely) begin to appear, the consultations should become annual.
People with diabetes, hypertension, a family history of glaucoma, or other risk conditions need even more frequent follow-up. In these cases, the ophthalmologist may recommend biannual or even closer visits.
How to create a healthy routine for your eyes#
In addition to regular assessments, incorporating daily habits that protect your vision makes all the difference in long-term eye health. Small changes in routine can prevent or minimize a number of problems.
The 20-20-20 rule is one of the most recommended by experts: every 20 minutes of screen, look at something 20 feet away (approximately 6 meters) for at least 20 seconds.
Maintaining good lighting in the workplace is equally important. The light should be enough not to force the view, but not so intense as to create reflections on the computer screen. The position of the screen also matters: it should be about 50 to 70 centimeters from the eyes, slightly below eye level.
Understanding the different visual problems 🔍#
Knowing the main problems that can affect our vision helps us to identify them more quickly and seek help when necessary. Each condition has its own characteristics and requires specific approaches.
Myopia: when the distance is blurry#
Myopia is one of the most common visual conditions in the world, affecting millions of people. Those with myopia see closely, but have difficulty focusing on distant objects. Traffic signs, faces of people across the street or what is written on the classroom board are blurred.
This condition usually develops in childhood or adolescence and may progress to stabilize, usually in early adulthood. Genetic factors play an important role, but the modern lifestyle, with little exposure to natural light and long time in close activities, also contributes to its increase.
Hyperopia: the challenge is close#
In hyperopia, the situation is reversed: the person sees better from afar, but has difficulty focusing on nearby objects. Reading a book, using the cell phone or doing manual work can become tiring and uncomfortable.
Many children are born with a mild degree of hyperopia that corrects itself naturally with growth. However, when the problem persists or is more pronounced, it can cause headaches, eye strain and difficulty concentrating, especially in school tasks.
Astigmatism: when everything gets distorted#
Astigmatism causes distorted or blurry vision both far and near. This happens because the cornea has an irregular curvature, such as an American football instead of a round soccer ball.
People with astigmatism often confuse similar letters, see halos around lights at night, and may experience discomfort when reading or using the computer for prolonged periods.
The role of food in eye health 🥕#
What we put on the plate has a direct impact on the health of our eyes. A diet rich in specific nutrients can prevent eye diseases and keep vision healthy for longer.
Vitamin A is essential for night vision and can be found in orange foods like carrots, pumpkin and papaya, as well as dark green vegetables. Lutein and zeaxanthin, present in kale, spinach and broccoli, protect the macula and may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
Omega-3s, found in fish like salmon and sardines, help prevent dry eye syndrome and contribute to retinal health. Vitamins C and E, present in citrus fruits, nuts and seeds, act as antioxidants, protecting eye cells from free radical damage.
When to seek an ophthalmologist urgently#
While many changes in vision are gradual and can be evaluated calmly, some symptoms require immediate attention.
Sudden loss of vision, even partial or temporary, should never be ignored. Intense flashes of light, especially if accompanied by many new floaters, may indicate retinal detachment. Intense eye pain, marked redness or sensation of “cortina” covering part of the visual field are also ophthalmological emergencies.
In such cases, seek expert care immediately. Response time can be decisive in preventing permanent damage to vision.
Special care for those who wear contact lenses#
If you wear contact lenses, you need to double your hygiene and maintenance. Never sleep with lenses that are not suitable for night wear, always wash your hands thoroughly before handling them and change the case regularly.
Symptoms such as persistent redness, pain, sensitivity to light or discharge should be evaluated quickly, as eye infections in lens wearers can be serious if not treated properly.
Protecting your eyes from the sun's rays#
Just as we protect the skin with sunscreen, our eyes also need protection from ultraviolet rays. Longer exposure without adequate protection can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and other serious conditions.
Sunglasses are not only a fashion accessory: they are essential protective equipment. Always choose models that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. The size of the lenses also matters 'DO the greater the coverage, the better the protection.
On very sunny days or in environments with intense reflection (beach, snow, water), the use of a hat or cap complements the protection. Remember that UV rays are present even on cloudy days, so the protection should be constant.
Children and visual health: starting early#
The visual health of children deserves special attention, because many problems can be corrected more easily when detected early. Visual development occurs mainly in the first years of life, and any interference in this process can have lasting consequences.
Note if your child shows signs such as squinting to see better, sitting too close to the television, holding books too close to his face, or complaining of frequent headaches. Eye deviations (when the eyes do not line up) also need to be evaluated quickly.
The first eye exam should take place in the first year of life, even if there are no apparent symptoms. Then, a new evaluation is recommended before starting literacy and regular monitoring throughout childhood and adolescence.
Technology and visual well-being: finding the balance ⚖️#
There is no denying that technology is an integral part of our lives. The secret is to use it consciously, minimizing its negative impacts on eye health.
Adjusting the brightness of screens to match ambient lighting helps reduce visual effort. Many devices offer night modes that reduce blue light emission, known to interfere with sleep and cause eye strain.
Taking regular breaks is not luxury, it is necessity. Get up, move, look out the window. Your eyes and your whole body thank you for these invigorating breaks.
Turning consciousness into action#
Knowledge without action does not transform realities. Now that you better understand the importance of taking care of your vision, the next step is to incorporate these practices into your day to day.
Start with the basics: schedule that appointment you have been postponing. If you do not already have a trusted eye doctor, research indications and schedule a thorough evaluation. In between appointments, use tools such as visual testing applications to monitor changes and maintain awareness about your eye health.
Remember that eye care is a continuous gesture of self-care, not an isolated action. Every healthy choice you make today is an investment in the quality of your vision tomorrow.
Sharing care with those you love 💙#
Talk to family and friends about the importance of taking care of the eyes. Often, people we love neglect their own health until someone close to them shows genuine concern.
If you notice that someone you love shows signs of visual problems, offer support with kindness. Sometimes all we need is a gentle push to take actions we know are necessary.
Creating a culture of preventive care benefits the entire community. When we normalize conversations about health and make self-care a collective priority, everyone wins.
Their eyes are precious and unique. They tell stories, express emotions and allow you to experience the world in endless ways. Caring for them with attention, affection and regularity is one of the most beautiful ways to honor your body and your life. That you can see clearly and health for many, many years, appreciating every detail of the beauty that exists around you.
